Constraints great for innovation

Jamaica is a 3D printed chair created using advanced 3D modeling and surface analysis techniques. Fully meets 3R principles.
Printed within a small build volume - 45 cm cubic square. Overall form enhances structural-strength and practicality.
Mixed material usage - PLA, aluminum and steel fittings. Colour choices communicate its product name.
A handcrafted chair 3D printed with biodegradable PLA materials. Easily reused, recycled and reduced environmental impact.
The main goal is to produce a fully usable, practical and aesthetically pleasing product within the constraints of small FDM printer build volume. That can be easily recycled and reused. Reducing the environmental impact of industrial plastics strongly associated with mass produced chairs. To offer an alternative to current non-environmentally friendly mass produced products.
This project started out as an investigation of what a designer can or not do with a hobby-grade FDM 3D printer. Can a fully functional chair be printed within FDM printer and material constraints? To address the needs and present a method that honestly contributes to a circular-economy.
The material used, meets all of 3R principles - circular economy, reducing, reusing, recycling. PLA is 100% biodegradable. All parts of this chair can be repurposed as a new product or re-cycled back into new 3D printing filament material or other types of new products. This product used a tiny fraction of energy to print in comparison to traditionally manufactured chairs.
